Slovak flag flies in front of Calgary City Hall

Zastava_2012_200For the 19th time in a row, several hardy Slovaks from Calgary attended a ceremony at the Calgary City Hall to commemorate Slovakia's independence.

It is not easy, after the New Year's Eve celebrations, to get up well before sunrise, drive in -14 deg. C weather to the center of Calgary and ensure that the Slovak flag will fly in the heart of Calgary for the whole day. It's great that enough Slovaks (and this year also a little Snow Bear) maintain the tradition.

Paul Benovsky obtained the necessary permits, and at 8:15 a.m. the security unlocked the flag pole of honour and hoisted the Slovak flag to the top.

Paul Benovsky in his short welcoming speech testified what a great feeling it is, despite all the efforts of those, including some countries, who did not want independent Slovakia to succeed, now look in awe at the country's achievements. The Slovak flag today added to celebrations of Slovakia`s hockey team advancing right here in Calgary to the medal round of the World Junior Hockey Championship. Slovakia is already among the top 6 teams in the world.

And on New Year`s day 2013, you can bet that the Slovaks in Calgary will be at the City hall again, celebrating the 20th Independence day of their homeland.
