
Ottawa’s economy centres around two major sectors: government and high tech where many Slovaks are employed. As well, Ottawa has many Slovak professionals, artists and Slovak-owned businesses. The University of Ottawa and Carleton University attract students from the Slovak Republic.
Popular Events
Slovaks are one of the largest groups participating in the annual Homelands Mass at the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Family-oriented activities include the Mother’s Day program, Kids Day (Den deti) picnic as well as the Slovak picnic at the Belloni Farm in August and the open-fire barbeque hosted by the Korbel Family. The traditional St. Nicholas (Sv Mikulas) party is one of the main highlights of the year. In October 2009 the Ottawa Slovak Community enjoyed the Oktoberfest “Dozinky” Dinner and Dance. The Mardi gras “Fašiangy” Dinner and Dance will be held in February 2010.
Churches
From September to June, on the second Sunday in the month, Slovak Mass is celebrated by Father Radoslav Lojan at the St. Hyacinth Polish Roman Catholic Church, 201 LeBreton Street North.
Community televison and newsletters
The monthly Slovak Spectrum television program provides information to Slovaks and promotes the Ottawa Slovak Community to general viewers. The program is broadcast at 11:30 am on the fourth Sunday of every month on Channel 22, Rogers TV in Ottawa. Community Producer is Anne Ladouceur
