40th Katarinska party in Calgary

13 Katarinska 200Canada has some disadvantages. For example, here they do not celebrate name days.

When the 40 years ago Palo Siska and his wife Eva wondered how to evoke in their small daughter Catherine our Slovak traditions, and to give her an opportunity to remember her grandmother, Catherine also (which after escaping from Slovakia in 1968 they did not know whether they will ever see her again), they decided to organize the first Slovak Katarínska party in Calgary.

Even after forty years, it remains the most successful Slovak fun event in our metropolis by the Rocky Mountains. Catherine is now a successful professional woman, Palo and Eva Siska have already retired in British Columbia, but thanks to them this beautiful Slovak tradition keeps going.

Tickets to the hall at the Royal Canadian Legion were sold out long before the celebration, because in addition to great entertainment, chef Paul Hebelka prepared a great feast with traditional schnitzel, the Moravian sparrow dish, and many other delicacies. DJ Juraj Fabian played the entire spectrum of music from traditional to the latest hits, folklore group Slnečnica started the evening with a short program of Slovak folk songs and dances, Miki Somos organized a raffle with many prizes, and the two hundred Slovaks, Czechs and a range of other nationalities who came to have fun were dancing until well after midnight. They will never forget that on November 25 we celebrate every and all Catherines. Even in Canada.

And the Slovak Club in Calgary has already book the hall for the 2014 Katarinska party.
