On New Year's day, the flag of Slovak Republic traditionally flies in front of the City hall in Calgary. The anniversary of the independence of Slovakia was again celebrated by members of the local Slovak community. Palo Beňovský from Branch 65 of the Canadian Slovak League obtained proper permit, and since the snow started falling overnight, only few enthusiasts made it at sunrise to the City Hall. Tradition, however, was maintained even after 21 years.
Calgary again started the New Year under the Slovak flag.
